If you are currently sitting in the top 15 men or top 15 women, plan on a one hour workout at the Fitness Center located behind the Field House from 530-630pm Wednesday, August 31st. This is a special bowling oriented program designed by the Fitness Center Director and Athletic Trainers. In addition to this weekly training, an additional one hour program will be provided for anyone to utilize on their own.
If you are currently sitting in positions 16-20, the program will be optional for this week. Please let me know if you're going to take advantage of it.
If you are in the top 15 and can't make it, please let me know why.
Any idea what areas these will cover Phil? Arms/legs/core/etc. Been going to the gym lately and want to make sure that I don't overwork anything. Thanks.
Actually, a little of everything. Probably a bit more focus on the lower body, shoulders and core.
From what I understand, these sessions will include strength, flexibility and aerobic training and I'm looking forward to finding out more detail myself!
My guess is that these workouts will work well within any program you may be doing on your own and will likely add to it effectively.
It really is. I'm anxious to see what they have us do. If anyone is interested in doing some team workouts outside of this, me and Joey have been going to the commons fitness center m-f. Wouldn't mind seeing some more people from the team there.
I think its a good idea. It will get the people in shape for bowling the long days that we bowl for the tourneys. I think it should be a every week thing. Maybe a couple days of the week
If anyone's interested, me and Joey are meeting up at the Evan's Fitness Center tomorrow around 5PM to work out. Usually lasts 45 minutes-1 hour 15 minutes.
Brad and I bowl league Wednesday night at 6:30 with eddie, Ej and Council but I'm going to be working out all the time with Cody Foote at the old gym like I did last year is that alright?
Connor, that's fine. I understand the conflict. As we get further down the road, other options might be added or times changed. I do want to get this to a point where everyone is participating on a regular basis as opposed to going in 90 different individual directions. We might learn a better way or different techniques through this program.
Hey everyone. In addition to this, it looks like me and Joey are hitting up the Evans fitness center Monday/Fridays around 5:15 PM and Tuesday/Thursdays around 9 AM, so if you have any interest in joining us, let us know, or just show up.
I could definitely see how workouts could benefit the team especially since the program is more directed toward what areas of strength you really need in bowling, but i really feel like workouts should be optional. i could probably get the same workout by putting in 4 games a day and working on mechanics and targets and wrist tricks and other things like that. i feel like i could beneift more by having a practice session with drills then going to workout for an hour every wednesday. the one thing i thought we could take from yesterday was the stretching. just voicing my opinion
You might be right, you might be able to get more out of it by putting 4 games in... so do that too. These workouts definately arent hurting anything and its not like it takes up a big timeframe.. its only 1 hour a week. I like the idea and dont think they should be optional... imo
All in all I thought the workout wasn't so bad, there were a lot of things that the instructor missed and I kinda disagree with the exercises that we are going to be doing but the idea of doing any kind of physical activity once a week doesn't hurt anyone. The whole thing about whether it should be optional or not is kinda silly. Look at it this way, any other sport, and we do want bowling to be considered a sport, doesn't or rarely has optional workouts/practices. Its either you show up to the practices or you don't compete. I guess I figure the more we treat bowling as a sport the more other people will too.
As far as working on the lanes i think that should be a much more frequent occurence. Bowling is not a power and endurance sport, its considered a technical or skillfull sport. you have to fine tune the elements, work on ball speed, release, rev rates, manipulating ball roll, and of course shooting spares.
Something different as well. Every year right before nationals the team starts the 6 am practices where we shoot spares, run drills, and do some mental work. IN NO WAY do I want to start 6 am practices, but I would like to start some mental game and strategy practices. I know Dolph in his prime, back in the 1930's did a lot of research on the mental game and I just think it wouldn't hurt to get that going a little earlier in addition to using the team handbook.
I completely agree with dannys post, especially the part about getting some practices started soon using the team handbook... for anyone who hasnt looked at the team handbook, definitely do that... there is some great stuff in there

It was the '20s

The first workout really just scratched the surface of everything that will eventually be covered. The difference between working out and just bowling some more is that a workout focuses on strengthening both sides of the body which in turn helps balance.
These weekly workouts are designed to be a springboard for additional work you do on your own or in other groups. Our trainer Alyssa is willing to help at other times either at the Fitness Center or at Evans Commons on the machines there.
I have copies of the full program that's been created for us. Stop by my office at Evans Commons 3110 and pick one up.
Otherwise, the weekly workout is here to stay. Here are Randy's thoughts:
This is something this program has needed for a long time. I think it will evolve over time to fit the teams bowlers (kinda tough to figure that out from one workout)
The team's participation is super exciting.
I'll see the top 15 next Wednesday. Others are welcome, just let me know that you're coming. Once we get through tryouts, we'll assess things and adjust as needed.
