Looking for feedback-USBC Proposal to Shorten Season

I am attending the annual collegiate coaches meeting in Las Vegas before JOG next week.  They just released an agenda and one of the topics that appears to be on the list to discuss is shortening the length of the regular season.  Right now it essentially runs from the last weekend of September through the 3rd weekend of February (22 weeks).

This would most likely mean that we would have to attend fewer tournaments in a season.  I don't have any specifics on exactly what the proposed length would be in weeks and when it would begin and end, but I wanted to get some feedback from current and past bowlers so I am speaking on behalf of general opinion and not just my own.  With so many new rules going into effect that limit participation, I'm NOT in favor of shortening the season, but what do you think?

Please chime in with your thoughts by July 7th, 2011 and please explain why you have the opinion that you do about this possibility.  Thank you!

I say no. I really dislike that they are wanting or even thinking about shorting the season. The one of best parts about college bowling is being able to travel to different centers and bowl a large number of events, if the school permits the program to. I htink with all the new rules going in that USBC is going to end up hurting college bowling more then helping it.

The usbc is an absolute mess. Disagree with them every time and you'll be right almost every time. I'd love to hear waht possible benefit they think could possibly come from bowling less

Yeah that's a definite no for me. If anything, they could delay it for a bit so it evens out over the year instead of having a majority of the tournaments during the first semester and having like 3 the next. I know schools have different schedules than ours but who cares about them right!? lol :)

Definite no here. As someone that can't come on until J-Term (And I'm sure I won't be the only one) I know I'm already going to see few tournaments as is.

No wayyyyy! I don't understand how they can think that any of the things they are doing is helping the sport in any way. Shortening rosters was retarded enough, now they want to shorten the season too? That's ridiculous.

I definitely agree with Setchell though. Having a more even schedule between the two semesters would definitely be a huge help, at least in my opinion.

Thanks for the feedback so far!  With the number of past and present bowlers in our program, I was hoping to get a few more responses than 6, but I know people don't check the forum as often in the summer.

The coaches meeting to discuss this proposal is Friday afternoon (7/8), so if you have any opinion on the topic, let me know by the end of the day today (7/7)!

I plan to take all of these responses directly to the meeting.

Thanks!

OK, the proposal is to whack October off the season and start with the MW Collegiate the first weekend in November.  It would still end with the Hoosier in February.

For us, that would mean the most tournaments we could get to would be 11, if we traveled every weekend from the first weekend of November through the first weekend of December, and then mid-January to the Hoosier.

Probably not until the 2013-14 season at the soonest.

Why?:  "The bowling season is longer than other sports"

"A shorter season will make bowling more of a "sport."

"I want more time with my team to practice before we go to tournaments."

wow USBC really is trying to ruin the sport... Shortening the season is just retarded. I loved the fact that the season was longer than other sports because we got to travel all over and it kept us busy. It made me really focus on managing my time well for homework and projects because of all the weekends we were gone. You'd think USBC would want to do what's best for the bowlers, seeing as many of us always tend to disagree with the changes they want to make.

When it says it is too long, and shortening it will help it fit in as a sport, are they comparing it solely to other college sports? If so, their reasoning is just on the sensible side of moronic. If they are comparing it across the board, then I say look at MLB, NHL and NASCAR. Just because the PBA is forced to do it, doesn't mean the USBC should do it. I for one, am first in line to vote the BPAA head of bowling.

And Phil, blast some of this stuff to LU bowlers on FB and I guarantee you will get responses, not just from current players, but us Alumni as well. I'm an opinionated SOB and am never afraid to give it, especially if asked.

Facebook is a good idea :) Maybe we should start a LU Bowling Facebook page. Since we all probably get on Facebook more than we get on the forum, I agree, you would probably get more feedback.

There actually is a LU bowling Facebook page out there already, but I don't have editorial control over it, which would be necessary for me to use that page to communicate.

I do have the ability to access this forum so it makes for a good communication tool, as long as everyone checks it like we've encouraged for years!wink.gif

We could always start a new LU Bowling fb page! :) But yeah, I guess we could just check the forum. :)
