woot woot to joey petzoldt coming here next year :) and it's kind of upsetting about the small amount of people coming here next year... definitely a big change from the amount we had come in this year lol
any bet its because of the new rule going into effect. recruitment will go down since we can only have a set number of people compete and a set number of teams. and since we do have a big school people will start looking at other schools before they look here
Actually...the new rules haven't really affected things directly yet... It's more the number of schools that offer "scholarships."
When LU started bowling, there were just 5-6 schools offering anything significant for bowling. Now there are at least 85 schools offering women scholarships and close to 35-40 on the guys side.
Recruitment takes a great deal of time and help from everyone, so if you know of someone that would be good to recruit, let me know, especially if you can get contact info on top of a name! You're the ones actually bowling with players at tournaments and seeing them, so you can be the ones on the front lines since there's no way I can attend the number of tournaments that you all do combined! I'm happy to hand out business cards for you to pass along as well. Just let me know!
For those going to JOG this summer, stop by the Lindenwood table and help me chat with people! I'll be there all day at the "collegiate experience" expo from 230p-9p Saturday, July 10th....along with at least 30 other schools!
this is no disrespect to phil or randy (and i think they would actually agree with me about this to an extent) but the best recruiting 95% of the time is done by the team members. The actual bowlers. Nobody out there knows who the good bowlers are better than us bowlers who go out there time and time again and compete again eachother.
You bowlers and team mates gotta get out there and talk about LU. I remember going to tournaments my first couple years here and it seemed like every tournament i'd go to i'd have at least one or two people come up to me and ask me about lindenwood. You got to be an ambassador out there. tell people about LU. tell them how great of a time you have. tell them how great it feels to walk into a bowling alley for a college tournament and have everyone look at you like you are the best. let em know how good it feels to win those tournaments and how good its gonna feel to them when they come here.
just look at the track record of bowlers that have come to lindenwood not necessarily because Randy or Phil called them but because of Word-of-Mouth from other bowlers. obviously I can only speak for the guys side as I dont know much bout the girls but...
Valenta ---> talked Mark French into coming here which got him and I here. Valenta ---> talked Mike Dole into transferring here Dole ------> Not 100% sure but im pretty sure he talked to Colt bout coming here Myself -----> talked Dean Richards into giving LU a try myself -----> talked Jason Dutcher into giving LU a try
the list can go on. and sure u can say thats just a small chunk of people...but those are people that prolly woulda NEVER thought about LU if they didnt get recruited from fellow bowlers and they made an impact on the team when they got there...
I am not saying that you need to go out there and sound like a used car salesmen and pitch LU to every bowler out there...just be friendly. Let people know about us. if someone asks you bout lu...write down there name and offer to send them a packet. We cant blame the lack of recruits on the coaching staff alone.
just my two cents

I agree, but there is one trend i really notice. Being from illinois and still being a youth bowler i see alot of kids with a decent amount of talent and usually we bump into each other and we eventually get on the conversation of college. It seems like everytime i talk to them, they either say o yea i was thinkin about going to mckendree or robert morris, and the occasional rock valley but thats just dumb, no offense to any rock vallians lol. but anyway, I went and watched the panther team challenge at st clair bowl. its a illinois high school tournament and i swear every decent bowler you see out there. mckendree is handing them business cards and talking to parents. i have seen alot of kids get suckered into anything and everything gary white says. but ya know what. he gets the kids too. not saying that the team doesnt have anything to do with it, but thats just something i have noticed. Another thing that i see kids get turned away by is equipment. not hating on brunswick at all cause im somewhat a fan.. but it kinda feels dumb when kids say arent you sponsored by brunswick? yea... i cant throw brunswick. gotta have storm/roto. i dont know if that has anything to do with a mojority of the kids but i know i have definately heard a couple kids mention that to me. And like robert morris they are/were on staff with roto but i heard a rumor about a loss of sponsorship but anyways they can throw whatever they want as well so that intrigues some kids too. I know council and phil semi preached about how we need to talk more and kinda try to sell LU to some kids but it seems that kids are 10 times more likely to go to the first school that approaches them. then when they try to look for other schools. I knew i wanted to go to LU because i knew dole and colt and dole definately sold it to me... i really like it at LU and i think we are going to have the best team in the nation next year. Some kids are just too ignorant to look at all their options. Phil and randy are always giving scholarships and we arent that expensive. Idk just some things i guess i notice. sorry about length

What about the intimidation factor? We are known for the vast amounts of kids that Lindenwood usually has on the team. And with the new rule that won't be possible anymore and the amount of spots available are gonna go down even further as the next few years go. Plus not to be arogant our team is pretty awesome and kids coming here know that and they also know that only three people from our A team aren't coming back, and we are adding another unmentioned from first semester.lol
booooom...brett proved my point more. gracias senor

In fact at Junior Gold in 2005, I bowled on a pair with Mark and we discussed the school briefly. I do remember talking to Town as well during that tourney.

Ryan got me interested in this place but randy pretty much got me into the school. He didn't even know of my ability and he still worked his ass off to get everything set up for me. After online poker became "illegal" in the u.s. I had no choice but to go to college and its because of Randy I got the opportunity.
I think our recruit class isn't very good this year due to the fact that there aren't too many good recruits out there. Next year will be sick tho. I am not saying that those kids on the list are bad but they are not your typical blue chip freshmen.
Also, to be honest, this could be a new era in LU recruiting. We've taking all comers to the point we're the biggest program in the country, and maybe one of the most hated.
I would like to see us be more selective. Offer the same scholarships, free bowling and coaching, but limit the number of athlete we accept. To those who appreciate it.
It would get athletes more dedicated to the program, and the game; It would make coaching more fun, and raise the level of the program.
but that just me talkin
