Reports from Team USA Trials...

well this was in my last thread but i wanted to copy it and start a new thread.  im not sure if anyone cares but i thought it would be fun to write up something day by day for people to read...if u dont care...no worries just skip this thread.  lol.

_____________________

practiced on all of them....this is just quick thoughts that i had of them...

started on the medium (seoul) and it hooks more than i thought it would. started with a very stable ball playing like 9-5. showed up to that pattern at the end of the practice session and that outside look i had was no where to be seen. ended up playing like 23-13ish. just had to go to a stable pearl. this pattern went away faster than i thought it would

then went to the long with no volume (paris). got no hook down lane. started basically squaring up to 15...just playing as straight as i can without giving up the 1-3. guys with hand eventually found hook. as they got drier there was no balls going back left at the break point for me tho. I had to just keep shoving left as the heads went (which was quickly) and play a fade...surprisingly had a good look doing it too. was using general surface to start and a virtual energy at a fresh 1k abralon later.

hit up the short after this one (bejing)...this one was rocket science. stand where u wanna and feed it right. lol. wasnt much guessing on where to play...just strictly matching up with the right ball/hand position. my best combo was with stronger pearls and trying to stay up the back of it to give a pretty smooth reaction. i had a good reaction with some of my weaker stuff and getting around it...but carry had me ringing 10s and 4s...so i think imma go with stronger stuff and staying behind it. this pattern held up better than i thought it would.

last one i bowled on was the longer pattern with volume (london). tough for me. couldnt find a real hook. got more hook than paris which was nice. seems like its gonna open up at the end. got to stay further right with my feet cause the heads held up which was nice but if u leak it right at all ur in lot of trouble. i played it pretty similar outta the gates as i did with paris except my ball selection. paris i liked my look with earlier and more stabler equiptment and on this pattern i like a little longer and quicker reaction equiptment.

----------------------------------------------

well i guess thats my report for now. maybe butch and dean will write something up too soon cause they might of seen different than i. but besides that, this has already been a great experience...usbc is really doing a good job with this tourny. good patterns. good format. all players get free practice every night from 9pm-1am which is sweet. the field is ridic...def the best are here. even fagan is bowling (so the rumor is...and he was at the practice session). so we will see...

OH btw. lucas wiseman has told us to spread the word that BOWL.COM will have live streaming during all qualifying blocks...much like the pba xtra frame setup. but this is free. well we start at 9am tomorrow. so good night all.

Day 1: London Pattern (long with volume)

Well i show up at the bowl kinda nervous cause i already had a negative mind set bout this pattern since i usually dont to well on long patterns like this (i know i prolly shouldnt have gone in with this mindset). When i got there I found out that i got paired up to cross with Mike Fagan all day...kinda cool to bowl with someone that good, but at the same time with him being further left than me and crossing my line all day made me see transition pretty quick every game.

Luckily we also had PJ Haggerty on our starting pair and I over heard that they wanted to burn up around tenish so I went ahead and did the same with them. I started with a Virtual Energy at fresh 1000 abralon pad basically just standing 21 trying to hit 15...basically playing dead straight and praying for a hook/smaking 5s out. lol. Game one i missed 2 single pins (I KNOW RIGHT SURPRISE!!! lol damn nerves).

For the first 5 games i pretty much had all the same game plan as it looked like scores were low...get nine, spare, dont split. ended up ball changing to my hyroad to clear the heads better, then my smash zone cause my hyroad was to over/under at the spot. I was grinding well with a low game of 184 and high of 207.

Game 6 i decided it was time to try something aggresive and i ended up moving deep and trying to stay as far behind it as i could and basically faded the head pin. shot 211 looking good so i decided it was gonna be my game plan for the rest of the day unless i just saw something way different after making the turn. thankfully it paid off and i finished with 268 225 235. ended at 112 over and around 20th place.

Good news is I picked up more pins than i thought i would at the end but randys prediction was right...def opened up at the end and the high rev players had fun. More good news is after game one I only had one easy open (a chopped bucket). 4 clean games. NO 2 OR 4 PIN MISSES RICH/RANDY!!! lol

Dean is around 170 over and Brad is 55 over. Tomorrow is the short. Gonna concentrate on staying in the shot again and keep making spares. So far its been an amazing experience already. If anyone else has a chance to come out next year u absolutely have to...trully is worth it. Just be ready for the grind if you do come. You really dont realize how hard it is to concentrate for 9 games straight and and stay focused for that long until u do it. well thats all i got for tomorrow.

Any questions/comments are def encouraged...id love to try to answer questions bout any of it any of this and wouldnt mind comments on my report/blog. Thank alot guys for the support...wish us luck for tomorrow

They were pretty tough for the first 5 or 6. Opened up a ton last few and really couldnt take advantage of it. Tomorrow is another day. Brad had TBR. haha

heres my recap for the 2 days so far. this is the hardest grind ive ever had to go through. esp. when pins arnt going your way. the guys out here are so good that when you dont have a complete understanding of angles and how ur equipment needs to go down the lane, u fall way behind. patterns arnt too demanding, so being on top of moves is a must. its definetely the best tournament ive ever bowled. even thought im down alot of pins, there is no way im out of it. i hope everybody can scramble up some money and bowl next year.

This tournament is hard. I have 3 270's and im 292 up. Thats a lot of garbage in between high games. I feel like the key is not drowning yourself in the early part of the day when they are tighter and to take full advantage of them when they open up. BTW these patterns are not the same as last year. I spent the first 6 games today trying to play last years short pattern. oops

I was a little surprised the scores weren't high on the Beijing. Eventhough half the field averaged about 210, no one averaged 240. Transition must have been interesting. I found it interesting that Janawicz used two different urethane balls on the fresh.

None of the LU guys started well. Did the shot differ from practice?

Holla out to the old men; John Marsala shoots 300!! He's in 33rd, not bad for someone whos almost a senior.

You got 34 guys, and 9 women, averaging 210. Scores go down from here.

alllllright here we go...

Day 2- Bejieng (short)

This was the shortest of the patterns. It obv looked like the easiest of the pattern on paper. From my view, this pattern was soley on how well u can get a ball to match up on this pattern. It was either u had 5 to the wall....or u were tying to seperate splinters and decide which one to hit. for me there was no in between. for me i didnt feel like i had a weak enough ball (I KNOW RANDY U TOLD ME TO TAKE URETHANE AND I FORGOT IT ON MY FLOOR IN CALI) to go straight up the spot which is what i wanted to do...instead i had to stand left and throw to the spot. The problem that i had was when i moved left i kept getting early hook so i would try to force it down lane and then it was just terrible from there. Another challenge i found was that the pairs were so different cause the prescene of urethane. ud get to one pair and there would be alot of carry down cause of urethane or big hook sports where there was none thrown yet. It was difficult for me to find a consistant hook spot on this pattern.

bad ball selection and lots of mental frustration was the obv cause of the bad bowling for me in this situation. the was the only pattern where i felt my spares werent were they should have been. i highly believe it was just cause i was on life tilt.

some specifics i guess....ummmm most people never got left of ten. i found my best look at like 8-4ish. i found hang right and early hook right. kyle king wacked em with urethane and the game i saw him i saw his break point ANYWHERE from 5 to we all thought he had a gutter ball and he shredded the rack. so ya, if u had the right match up, u were gonna kill it. i just dropped the ball that day.

day 3 - Paris (longest with light volume)

This was def the most "interesting" and "surprising" pattern to me. After a long practice session with everyone after the short, i felt like i was ready for this one.

It played very tight the first few games. I was forced to play directly up like 13 to start. Fagan was even further right of me playing dead straight at the head pin. Now what surprised me at first was that my mind set was that imma be moving left and fast to avoid the burning heads. Well going into game 2 Fagan and I were talking...and he was saying it might be better for us to move right...so we started shoving right to avoid everyone and pretty much just play the buff. this worked short term but we didnt do it all day. if i remember right it had to be game 4 when we made like a 25 board jump. I went from playing 10ish to playing 25ish...no where in between. This pattern scored very well for me as long as i had the right ball...which was def brunswick, lol. smash zone rolled very well for me. my key was speed. stay slow and solid at the line and my carry was pretty good indeeed. There was some high scores on this...mostly people with slower ball speed. This was my highest scoring pattern by bout 40 pins i believe...i had a nice run of 220s and 230s at the end. my spares were def on point and my mental game was finally good. The practice the night before def helped me.

so my keys were def, stay left ahead of the move, keep my elbow tucked in, keep my ball speed slow..

day 4 - seoul (medium)

Easily the toughest of the 4 patterns. At the time this is def the time where i felt like i was throwing it the best. i tried to burn up outside with my blast zone (like 3ish) gave me a nice bump the first game for sure. I ended up using my pin down hyroad the first game playing up 7...having lil rom left and good room right. (it helped that fagan was playin dead up 1)...if there was any doubts of someone hiting the ball that hard and not being able to play the twig, u shoulda seen this guy...it was insanely impressive. For the first 2-3 games i stayed about in the same spot...just shifting left a little and opening up my shoulder to get more angle to the gutter. around game 4 ish i made a big jump left and started hitting left of 20 with at the arrows and like 10 with my breakpoint. played a lil like paris towards the end of the day for me...just less room in all directions. My angle was a little off all day which resulted in alot of poor carry. I dont think I had the right ball in my hand, but I feel like i had the best ball in my hands that I had with me. Going from pair to pair on this was tough cause they were so different. As this was a pattern where alot of people played alot of different angles. or u got screwed like tuckfield did and got matched up with Haugen where he played up 10 with plastic all day. (great lane play pro). following that was rough as there was huge hang spot right there. but dead hook anywhere else.

day 2- I wasted 6 games trying to play last years short pattern.

day 3- I started the block w ryan and fagan. Me and mike went up 10ish and both shot over 250.  leading after 5. jump to other side of building and shoot 780. fun.

day 4- tried everything imaginable. I even 2 handed and tried plastic. I was close all the way util came 35 where I just couldnt get it going. fagan is retarded good. at least he runs bad in roulette to prove hes human.
