At 4:45AM on Sunday morning, my dad recieved a phone call from St. Peter's Hospital in St. CHarles informing him that Mike Halwe had suffered a major heart attack and is in critical condition. We were contacted as his emergency contact, and are on our way there now. Anyone who reads this please contact Me (502-314-6396) and if you can make it to the hospital, please go. At this point we are 4 1/2 hours away. If you get any information, please call us, we are on our way.

I talked with Daniel a few minutes ago. He and his Dad arrived at the hospital around 1015a this morning.
Halwe is in intensive care. He is pretty much breathing on his own, but is on a ventilator and aortic pump to help provide more oxygen to his system and to take some of the strain off his heart. He does have severe blockage and will need by-pass surgery, but will need to be transferred to a different hospital that can perform it.
They have him pretty knocked out, but he is somewhat responsive and has squeezed someone's hand when asked, at least on his right side.
It's a wait and see situation until he regains some strength. Daniel is keeping Randy & I updated and I'll pass along any new information that becomes available.
We talked to the nurse today, she said that in terms of his heart and his breathing, he is getting stronger. She said they have some concerns about his kidney's, but she did not explain any further. Mike is still on the ventilator and heart pump, but they hope to get him off by the end of today. He is still heavily sedated and unconscious. Please keep him in your prayers.
Talked to the nurse a bit ago, and she said they decided not to wake him today, thought he could deal with the balloon better if he was out. They are hoping to wake him tomorrow sometime.
I will try to keep people up to date as much as i can
Just spoke to the nurse, they still plan on waking him late this afternoon. They are going to take the balloon out around 10:00 am and he needs to be still for 6 hours after that, so they will keep him out for that time. My personal guess is that they will wake him up around 4:30-5:00.
Farish just informed me that Halwe had another heart attack shortly after noon today. They're moving him to the cardio-pulminary area of the hospital. No additional details are available at this point.
To add to what Phil said (this is a copy of what i posted at the lounge):
OK, New not so good news
Mike had another major attack today around 12:00. Someone is with him and she said that he was going back up to ICU in a few and then they are going to move him to BJC. Beyond that i don't know what is going on. They are putting the balloon back in so i would guess that he had the attack after they took it out. I know this can happen but do not know what his chances are now.
As always I will keep you informed on what is going on as I find out.
According to Daniel and Mike's nurse at Barnes St. Pete, he will have a triple bypass surgery as soon as they evaluate him at Barnes St. Louis. Right now there are some questions whether his heart is strong enough to survive the surgery. Definitely touch and go...

Ok, this is the mother of all updates. I am home now, my wife is still at BJC. They are going to try to move the balloon to his other leg. The problem as BB said is in his ****ty circulation. His heart is rather damaged and at this point as it stands he would not survive the surgery. That does not mean he would never survive it though. There is a question of a stroke as ST. Peters reported paralysis on his left side. They are going to do a brain scan and see what is up there. I just got off the phone and heard a best case that has him recovering but it is a long shot. They have told us that they will stop though if it is clear that "he" is gone and is just machines running him, which would be per his wishes.
This big lesson in the past several hours for me and my wife is this. If you know what you want done get it in legal writing. He did not do this and now Foot, Farish and myself get to play that game. I thank God that the hospital seems open to hearing what he would want in all of this, but ... hell i lost my train of thought there. I am getting a drink and gonna try to get some rest.
As i find stuff out during the night i will pass it along.
And sorry about the cryptic texts, my texting skills just don't compare to my awesome typing skillz
OK, Balloon is out but leg is not responding. they are going to try to remove the blood clot. My wife is coming home as this is going to take a few hours. As if this could even be said, things are getting critical again.
Mike passed away last night around 4:30 during surgery to repair his damaged leg. It had suffered damage due to the balloon, and doctor's went in surgically to try and fix it, but Mike wasn't strong enough for it. Hanke's wife was there, so I'm sure he can shed more light on it. Check back for more details, maybe.
As Randall said if Halwe wouldn't have dedicated years of recruiting and sharing of knowledge for the game of bowling, there probably wouldn't be a bowling team at Lindenwood. He was the kind of guy that would welcome you into the pro shop to shoot the sh** and talk to you not only about bowling, but life. No matter what problems you were having he was willing to try his hardest to help you out. There were many times I had a break between classes and would drive up the the BA just to chat with Mike. He always had some interesting story to talk about that I have never heard and usually it taught me some type of lesson about bowling, or life. Just keep in mind that no matter what year you are at Lindenwood, Mike Halwe has probably had some type of good influence on you. There are so many people he has helped in his years, he will always be respected, & remembered!
we lost a great man today...The bowling alley wont be the same without him around. he was never anything but nice to anyone including myself when i was just the random kid from california. He was always a great guy that was willing to help even when he didnt really have the time...always put other people in front of himself. He will be greatly missed. However, though he was taken from our lives physically im sure he will still be looking down upon all of us from a better place.
town
miss you already halwe

Halwe was definitely the guy that you could always talk to about anything. He was everyone's friend and made you feel accepted no matter what. He was always there and never said no to anyone when they asked for help. I have so many good memories with him and yes, he will be very much missed. The good part is that he is not suffering anymore... Cheers to Halwe for everything that he has done for all of us at one point or another..

My wife was at BJC untill they took him in for the opperation to try to save his leg. They told her it would be hours so she came home. They called around 6:00 this morning to tell us that he had coded on the table and they tried for an hour to bring him back. he was too far gone.
Mike was one of a kind. one of the few people i could be totaly cold with in the way brothers are. This sucks.
I don't have the contact info for the Alums, people like timmy, chase, solivic, flanagan. People who know them please contact them.
Can we get Mathews to write something for him? Or could one of us do it? He gave everything to this game. The shop was why he did not have the insurance to help keep him more healthy.
It's wonderful to see such a positive outpouring of memories for him. I couldn't say it any better than many of you have already. The bowling family and the community in general lost a great person.
Hanke, I posted the news on the Master's League forum, so Solivic and Flanagan already know and many others still visit this forum quite often, so I'm sure the word will spread.
Jes Les, Shadow, and J Lowe have been keeping me updated about everything and then I started watching the forum as well...needless to say I've had a lot on my mind over the past few days...even all the way out here in Jersey.
Halwe was an amazing guy. He was the kind of guy that I always knew I could talk to about bowling or about anything. He always had something good to say...somehow always knew exactly what to say. So many memories...from mooning the stone 9 on a Thursday night, to downing mountain dew after mountain dew, to goin to states wearing the ugliest shirts imaginable...to sittin back on his stool in the pro shop acting as the man with all the answers...and most of the time he did...heck, he always had the crowd of people in the shop to prove it. He has said things to me that I'll never forget. He's taught me things that I'll aways use. I think it goes without saying that today is indeed a sad day as we have all lost an incredible, caring, one of a kind amazing guy.
We'll all miss him more than he could ever have known.
I didn't know Mike very well... In fact, I only met him a few times, but he seemed like such a great guy and was so full of life. Very funny and very knowledgable about bowling. It was a pleasure for me to have met him, even though it was only a few times.. He will be greatly missed.
i hadn't teared up until reading that, Panic.....and every word of it was true. every. single. word.
yeah...i've been tearing up periodically all day. right now i can't really talk about it or think too much about it without a few tears. i don't think i'm alone on that one.
i'm trying to work out being out there for the services but i'm not sure if it'll be possible for me to get there. i'll feel really bad if i don't...i had taken vacation time this whole week as it is, and money has been extremely tight for me...i'll see what i can do. sucks living so far away when things like this happen. :( i'll see what i can figure out.
Hey guys I saw alot of you on Thurs 1/3 and alot of you have donated some money for flowers for Mike. Thank you so much everything is appreciated. If anyone else wants to donate any money for flowers/donation, that would be great. Just get in contact with me ASAP (724)875-1585 Thanks so much everything is appreciated.
After No!! deliberation I ordered memorial patches to be placed on everyones shirts. They should be here before the first j-term tourny but only time will tell. i ordered enough to outfit all bowlers with 2 one for each shirt as well as enough to put them on the extra shirts for nationals if anyone would like an extra i will have plenty. (they are similar to the DW for Dick Weber)
if you need some money for that nick, i will be more than happy to pitch in. i think that is a great idea. i have been reading what you guys wrote about Mike, and I wish I could share a good story. I am new so I didn't know him all that well. I did know him well enough to know he was a great guy who cared about all of us and our team. My heart goes out to him and lets show him this year that the program he started back in the late 90's (1999 i think?) still has it in them and win nationals this year for him (and ourselves of course). see you guys around.
Nick is there anyway you could either get me info on that or order 5 more for the BWA? Jlowe can back me up on that but that would be real cool.
I know you all want to know about the funeral, well so far there is no info to speak of.
Turns out Mike had an aunt. After a VERY long day at Mike's house (Shudder) it looks like she is wanting me and my wife to set stuff up. That process should begin tomorrow. I do know it will be through Bopp Funeral Chapel. My guess is that it will be mid week (My anniversary is on Tuesday and my wife really does not want to have it then, since we are making the arrangements we get to be that selfish!!) Beyond that please be patient. When a loved one dies we usually have stuff more together, with Mike it is all chaos.
