I know some of you lurk on the Collegebowling forum. One of the Webber Int freshmen just post what they have to sign to bowl there: The WIU Bowling Program contract is as follows (you will receive a hardcopy to sign upon arrival): I understand I am a scholar-athlete. As a scholarship recipient of the Webber International University program, I have many responsibilities. In signing this document, I am agreeing to be bound by these expectations formally. I understand that my first priority to the program is academic success. I will strive for excellence in the classroom on a daily basis. As with our goal to be at our best on the lanes, my objective is to represent the bowling program as an outstanding academic team. Accordingly, I will ensure that I create adequate time to study and be prepared for all classes, class assignments and class assessments. Our team GPA goal is 3.5 or higher. USBC Collegiate has a 2.0 minimum. Our team minimum GPA is 2.5 to be eligible for participating with the travel team. A bowler who earns less than a 2.5 will be suspended immediately from travel team competition for one semester. A bowler receiving between 2.0 and 2.49 will be eligible to practice with the team. Anyone failing to earn a 2.0, will be suspended immediately from the team for one full semester and not able to practice with the team. Two consecutive semesters under 2.0 will result in a loss of scholarship. I further understand that I have an obligation to the program to attend every practice, individual, team as well as fitness. I understand that missing practice of any kind will result in a suspension from the next tournament. I will not ask to be exempt from practice because a lack of planning or wasted time that could have been used for studying. Emergency situations arise and will be dealt with on an individual basis. All three coaches should be notified if you are going to miss practice for an actual emergency. I understand that the Webber International University bowling program is designed to have maximum impact as a complete holistic system. Accordingly, I promise to give 100% effort, 100% of the time and do all requested tasks to the best of my ability. If I choose not to complete what is asked of me, I understand that this will be seen as a selfish act and will purposefully undermine team unity and team program quality. Moreover, if I choose to do my own thing, I understand that I will be suspended from team competition for two months. Multiple violations will result in a loss of one's scholarship and removal from the team. I understand how valuable a sponsorship from a major bowling ball manufacturer is to our program. Individual and team loyalty has long-term benefits for the team as well as myself. Accordingly, I will bowl EXCLUSIVELY with EBONITE brand equipment year-round, during the season as well as during the pre and post-season. If I choose to disregard this responsibility and bowl with another company's equipment, I understand that I will be suspended from team competition for two months. Multiple violations will result in a loss of one's scholarship and removal from the team. This required use does not include Hammer, Columbia or Track. I understand that the WIU coaching staff members are the coaches of this program that I chose to attend. When working with any other coach (national team, international event, local coach, etc.), I will communicate the physical game goals, to this individual, that are consistent with the changes made by program coaches. I will also request that these coaches communicate directly with the WIU coaches via phone, e-mail or both to ensure a consistency of approach between these coaches. I understand that I have a responsibility to pay practice fees and ball fees in a timely manner. So...you have keep a 2.5, bowl only as team player and use the Ebonite brand all year round, or your a goner? I like the last part about communicating only the game goals to your own coach at home. Hey, Jenny, how would you like to have Tom only "communicate" the programs coaching changes and he call us when he sees you? That's pretty stupid. That ether shows a level of coaching arrogance or insecurity. I've always said the best coach is someone who knows your game the best. Doesn't have to be a gold level coach. In Brian Valenta's case it was his mom. Oh, yeah, don't forget to pay those practice fees in a timely manor.

Dolph, I think that it is pretty stupid that he'd have to respond back and forth like that.. Really quite weird especially since I talk to Phil about what he thinks and what Tom thinks as well and I go from both coach's views.. This is a very interesting contract. I think if we did some of this stuff though it would make people try a little harder all around... So I don't think some of it's a bad idea at all.
I would actually like to see some of this here at LU also. After reading this contract, I took a look at their website and their program overview (http://webberathletics.com/sports/2009/10/12/sidebar_486.aspx?path=W-Bowling)and while they are much stricter, it seems like it works and that they get a lot of great training and knowledge on everything from mental game to reading the lanes to fitness. I really think we could benefit from having more structured practices, workouts, classroom learning, etc.

i definitely agree... i mean after all, they are a very successful program.. and so are we, and look at what little we do.. if we even did half of what they do, we could be even more successful.
I agree to a point. It's cool going to Kegel Center to practice. Those guys do nothing but coach and are on the cutting edge of new technology in the industry.
Honestly, we will never be them. We have other jobs. Maybe if the school hires Phil full time, we can get something similar, but it still won't be like them.
And frankly, I don't want to be like them. Me personally, I am not a classroom guy. Phil would be better for that than me. When I was the head coach I felt what we were is the largest program in bowling with most amount of scholarship money given away that allowed the most people to bowl. We give free bowling away and have some pretty smart bowling guy with us and Rich around to give lessons anytime you want one. Structure is not me. I am good with that. Now if the school wants to give us money for that, like Phil has suggested, we may change soon.
Ether way, I'll be here, but I doubt we'll ever get to be a Webber. That is not us.
