I need some facts and looking your way Coach Dog. I need facts on St. Bernard's. I have tried looking on the web but failed....and I'm impatient.......so, I need mainly facts on their mating. Like how old do they have to be to mate? I have a male pup who is 4 months and a 3 year old female back home and they want to mate them. So if you have any info please share. Especially since this morning he started "practicing", if ya know what I mean.
He probably won't be ready until he's at least a year old, no matter how much he "practices". Remember, large breeds mature slower than smaller breeds. Also, make sure to get both of their hips checked (OFA), and check both bloodlines for any abnormalities Saints may be prone to inheriting. (You can find those at the National St. Bernard Club website; go to akc.org and look up Saint Bernard, there should be a link.) You can also check the local (Chicago area) Breed club; again, they should have a website link through the National club.
Now, my question is why do you want to breed them? Do you show? Are your bloodlines good? Are you just trying to make some money? (Good breeders don't make much; puppy mills do. Trust me.) I'm not serious about much, but I am serious about dogs; I'm in rescue, and I get to see the results of home breedings and puppy mills that turn up in shelters way too often.
Well, they do have the female's hips certified. They have to wait for the pup to be...I think 6 months old. The Saints both have good bloodlines and have no problems. I think they want to make some money that is why they want to mate them...Probably not going to last very long...they live in a small town (like 900 people) so I do hope they find homes for the pups before they actually breed them. I am very much into rescuing animals but I can't while being at LU. Thanks for the info..don't know who much they listened but that is something I can't control.
Cool. I'll take you on a rescue with me sometime then...I had four in a three-week period this summer...a puppy mill shut down in Springfield, MO. Have a possible in KC right now; someone else is working it, but I'll probably wind up with the dog.
Instead of having kids I'll probably have a house full of animals...I could see that happening. My guy doesn't know that yet though....maybe that would be an important thing to discuss...lol.

Nothing wrong with that... Dogs are better than kids!
1) They don't ask for designer clothes.
2) They will eat the same thing every day with no complaints.
3) School is 8 weeks and costs around $65; and they are usually happy to go.
4) You can have a leash on a dog in public and no one chastises you for being cruel.
5) They don't borrow your car or ask for money to go out.

they do however **** the carpet, and will ocasionaly bite you, but other than that they are great!
