2014-15 Schedule Ideas

Will be putting the 2014-15 tournament schedule together soon for approval from the school.  The USBC has released the PRELIMINARY calendar, but final confirmation of all tournament dates is expected no later than early July.  You can see full prelim national schedule by visiting "additional links" menu on Bowling home page on the Student Life Sports website.  With the new info, here's a slightly revised summary of possible ideas.  Thoughts?

2014-15 Schedule Ideas
Tournaments in bold are pretty much absolutes, the rest can be flexible.

October 4-5, 2014:  MW Collegiate-Wauwatosa, WI

October 11-12:  Midstates-Wichita, KS  OR  Western Shootout-Indianapolis, IN

October 18-19:  Orange & Black-Dayton, OH OR Sandhill Collegiate Classic in Lincoln, NE

October 25-26:  Boilermaker Classic-West Lafayette, IN                            (Southern Kentucky Classic in Bowling Green, KY listed 10/4 & 10/5 now)

November 1-2:  Brunswick Southern-Marietta, GA

November 8-9:  Leatherneck-Davenport, IA/Moline, IL

November 15-16:  Striking Knights Classic-Louisville, KY OR Titan Invite-Oshkosh, WI   (also shows Hastings, NE & Adrian, Mich. events on calendar)

November 22-23:  Lions Classic-Home

November 28-29:  Team Match Games-Fairview Heights/Belleville, IL

December 6-7:  Warhawk Open-Madison & Sun Prairie, WI (about 6 hours away)     ???  (just throwing it on there-would make 10 events in fall)

January 10-11, 2015:  Hoinke Bearcat-Cincinnati, OH OR Eagles Baker Challenge-Addison, IL  (neither event confirmed on prelim calendar yet)

January 17-18:  ISBPA/Kegel Midwest Classic (tier 1)-Addison, IL

January 24-25:   McKendree Baker-Fairview Heights & Belleville, IL

January 31-February 1:  ???   Not much on calendar now that I see-maybe weekend off!

February 7-8:  Norse Collegiate Classic (Erlanger, KY near Cincinnati)   ???

February 14-15:  Hoosier Classic-Indianapolis, IN

Sectionals-singles/team
March 13-15:  Locations TBD

Midstates was fun last year and the pattern was challenging. I would pick that over Western

Orange and Black is a better tournament with better teams. Last year the Midland classic had 9 or 10 teams. The only good team last year was Midland. I believe it's the same house where the ITC's were but no one wants to go to Nebraska.

Southern Kentucky Classic
Striking Knights
Eagles Baker because we bowl at the same house next week.

Just no Nebraska please

I think I would like to go back to the Striking Knights..... It takes way too long to go to the Titan.

We should go to Midstates, Orange and Black, Boilermaker, and the Striking Knight. The Boilermaker is a way better tournament than what is in Ky that weekend.

I think we should do the Orange and Black again. I really liked that tournament ;)

I think we should not go to Midstates and try out the Western Shootout.

And I think we should go back to the Striking Knights tournament.

Going out to Vegas is EXPENSIVE!  I looked five months out from today and tickets are already pricing at over $400 each.  In order to take just one men's and one women's team, I estimate that we'd need to do a minimum of $3,000 to $4,000 worth of fundraising, or pay that amount out of pocket to even have a chance to make that happen.  If we can get into the Brunswick Southern, that trip is much more efficient.

I personally like Midstates because it's a longer format, so more opportunity for everyone to bowl on each roster, plus we see teams there that we don't see anywhere else.  The 2015 ITC is also at Northrock Lanes, the guy's house for Midstates.  Western Shootout is at Western Bowl in Indianapolis and is a basic six team games, 16 baker games format with no match play.

Orange and Black is pretty popular and has a match play finish, even for JV if I recall correctly.

Our girls have won the Boilermaker four years straight...Probably should try to extend the streak...  W. Kentucky shootout is very similar, five team games on Saturday, 12 bakers on Sunday.

Titan was really long trip and the lanes were like bounce houses.  Striking Knights is a nice four hour drive to Louisville.

Back to back baker tournaments might be interesting in late January/early February.  Columbus is about 7 hours of actual driving time and we lose an hour, but that might be do-able.

Keep the thoughts coming.  When the final tournament schedule is released and confirmed, I'll pull the trigger quickly.

I like the idea of Norse and warhawk

My votes are for Midstates, Orange and Black, Boilermaker, Striking Knights, and Hoinke. It was nice to go toward home for the Titan last year but it was too long of a trip and I don't think the Warhawk is worth it either. I don't know much about the Norse.

The Norse is not worth the trip

Both the war hawk and Norse each have a decent number of teams and enough openings for us to take three teams each.  The concern is that the war hawk would make 10 tournaments in a row in the fall and the war hawk would be the weekend before finals.  I would lean towards the Norse because the last weekend in January will probably be a weekend off, so that might be the only way we can practically get 14 events in.

This year, if memory serves me, the Norse was a one day tournament on Saturday. The next day, the Thomas Burris was held in Lexington. Last year was the first year for the Norse, and next year's schedule could be different.

Ah, good point.  It does appear that those two events are scheduled back to back on the same weekend.  It appears the cities are about an hour away from each other.  Each event had 5 team games and 12 baker games, so the two combined would add up to quite a bit of bowling.  Hmmm.

The logistics could work for that weekend, but I would rather have a weekend off than a weekend at home.

Yeah, I follow you.  However, it looks like we will already have the prior weekend off, so not traveling February 7-8 would mean TWO weekends off in a row and having the McK Baker Challenge January 24-25 as the last tournament of the season before the Hoosier.  The more I think about it, the more I conclude that 10 tournaments in the fall is too many, especially since the 10th one would have to be the weekend before finals week.

We've had 14 regular season events the last few years, but the only way we get to that number again for 2014-15 is to find something to bowl January 31-February 1 or February 7-8.

I know everyone hates NE but for the Lincoln shootout it would be interesting to see what teams have gone in previous years. Just a chance to see different competition but Orange and Black is always a great tournament for us so I wish we could replace a different tourney.

I def think we need to continue to go to Midstates, always challenging and a great tournament

Again, Hoinke we have always won and would be great to continue that, but maybe this year switching things up for some tournaments wouldn't be a bad decision. But when and where we make those choices is the decision.

I know no one liked the Titan because of the lane issues and the bounce when we all released and the drive is terrible.

Honestly for the weekends where tournaments have two options would you mind posting last years team attendance so we can see what kind of competition we would have visiting each one Phil??

I think more than anything that should lead to our decision about where to go!

Crusader had a total of 10 varsity and JV women's teams last year.  Hastings had six.  Bulls Country Classic is NCAA, so it's only women, and we can't go there.

What's your reasoning Kyle?  Why do you want to go to Western Shootout instead of Midstates?

I'm revisiting this thread again because when the final event schedule came out, the Thomas Burris Memorial and Norse Classic were no longer listed on the same weekend.

SO....do we drive six hours for a one-day event just on Saturday, February 7, 2015 for the Norse Classic?  Or do we drive 5.5-6 hours to Dubuque, Iowa for the Crusader Open (I think this was the Clark Conference Invite last year) February 7-8 for a more traditional 6 games/16 baker games format?  OR, do we take a chance on the Blue & Gold that weekend?  Last year, it was only a men's tournament, but perhaps they'll attract more teams and a women's field on the new weekend?  OR, do we just bowl a 10th tournament in the fall the first weekend of December?

Thoughts?  I'm open for suggestions.

The master tournament schedule is now online at:   http://www.bowl.com/Collegiate/Collegiate_Home/Season_schedule,_results/

Results from last year are at:  http://www.collegebowling.com/events.asp

The trip to KY is not worth it for a one day tournament
